State Bank aims for financial access to 50% of SMEs by 2020

The 10th Pakistan SME Conference 2016 organized by SHAMROCK Conferences International, concluded at the Pearl Continental Hotel in Karachi today. The experts and regulators deliberated upon broad-based solutions for accelerating growth in the Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) sector.

Assistant Director of State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), Imran Ahmed addressed the forum and expressed his institution’s commitment through NFIS to provide financial access to 50% of SMEs in the country, while aiming to extend Rs. 400 Billion as SME loans by the year 2020. The stakeholders urged the creation of a supportive regulatory environment, to optimize productivity through technological and financial access, as the SMEs have the potential to bring a powerful economic revolution in a developing country like Pakistan.

The theme of the conference was “Facilitating SMEs Makes Economic Sense”. The discussions covered key development topics like; Infrastructure, Regulatory realignments, Financing, Reforms, Sustainability, Facilitation & Empowerment’, along with the subjects of Good Governance & Human Resources development’. The stakeholders urged tangible measures to modernize infrastructure, banking, leasing, insurance and logistics to build capacity. The need to reduce taxes and duties on Alternate Energy solutions for the SMEs, to over-come the hazards of energy-crisis was also highlighted.


In his keynote address, the Board Member of SMEDA, Engr M.A. Jabbar stressed, “Advocacy for SME development needs to be strengthened, and preferential treatment should be given to the SMEs, which is the deprived segment” while the Chairperson of Sindh Board of Investments, Ms. Naheed Memon said, “China is looking at Pakistan as a partner. Our institutions must perform well to take full advantage of CPEC as countless ancillary businesses will emerge from this endeavor.”

The Group Head of Micro & SME at Bank Al Falah, Khurram Hussain, who gave a presentation on “Re-Thinking SMEs – To do Things Differently” emphasized digital technologies and global best-practices to ease SME lending; which is showing better performance, which is a great success for the SME and banking sectors.” The SBP made a special mention of the initiatives taken by the bank.

Zulfikar Thaver, President UNISAME and Chairman of the Technical Committee of National Financial Inclusion Strategy (NFIS) stated that “Establishment of new well equipped and specialized industrial estates for SMEs is a part of the strategic way-forward. Research and Development activities must be nurtured for creating collective advantages. The government must promote the housing industry, which boosts the demand for more than 36 sectors and a vast range of products. Special incentives and tax-relief programs should be offered to promote transfer of new technologies among the SMEs. The conflict-resolution mechanism (Ombudsman) must be speeded up to facilitate smoother operations and faster growth, while closer coordination between SME promotion institutions is also a need of the day.”

The Board Member of the Zarai Taraqiati Bank, Majyd Aziz discussing ‘A New Financial Paradigm for Agriculture’, said, “Technology should be adopted to improve agriculture whereas, food security should be improved through best-practices and establishing farmers entrepreneurial associations to safeguard their interests.”

Group Head of SME at Pak-Brunei Investment Company, Ms. Arjumand Qazi in her discussion on “Making SMEs Bankable” stated, “SMEs in Pakistan are not bankable due to many reasons like, misleading documentation of these small businesses. Lenders must work beyond the balance sheet and evaluate their qualitative potential, business model and products.” A panel discussion focused on the methodologies for promoting the Culture of Entrepreneurship to spur SME growth which was addressed by Chief of SMEDA Sindh, Mukesh Kumar and Vice President of First Women Bank, Ms. Samina Geti.

Samsung’s 4th Generation V-NAND stacks 30 percent more layers of cell-arrays than its predecessor

Samsung introduced its 4th generation, 64-layer triple-level-cell V-NAND flash memory that pushes the envelope of NAND scaling, performance and storage capacity. Stacking 64 layers of cell-arrays, the new V-NAND can increase its single-die density to an industry-leading 512Gb and its IO speed to 800Mbps, which further distinguishes Samsung’s technology leadership in three-dimensional NAND cell structure design and production. Starting in August 2013, Samsung has previously introduced three generations of “industry-first” V-NAND products with 24, 32 and 48-layer vertical cell-array stacking technologies.

Samsung plans to provide the world’s first 4th generation V-NAND flash memory products in the fourth quarter of this year, which will help manufacturers to produce faster, more stylish and portable computing devices, while offering consumers a more responsive computing environment.

World largest capacity drive − 32TB SAS SSD − for enterprise storage systems

Samsung’s latest Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) SSD is the world largest single drive ever introduced to the industry based on 512-gigabit (Gb) V-NAND chips. A total of 512 V-NAND chips are stacked in 16 layers to form a 1-terabyte (TB) package and the 32-terabyte (TB) SSD contains 32 of those packages.

By adopting a new 4th generation V-NAND design, the 32TB SAS SSD can reduce system space requirements up to 40 times compared with the same type of system using two racks of hard disk drives (HDDs). The 32TB SAS SSD will come in a 2-5-inch form factor and be produced in 2017. Samsung also expects that SSDs with more than 100TB of storage capacity will be available by 2020, thanks to continued refinement of V-NAND technology.

1TB memory in a single BGA package

The Samsung 1TB BGA SSD features an extremely compact, ball grid array (BGA) package design that contains all essential SSD components including triple-level-cell V-NAND flash chips, LPDDR4 mobile DRAM and a state-of-the-art Samsung controller.

It will deliver unprecedented performance, reading sequentially at 1,500MB/s and writing sequentially at 900MB/s. By reducing its size up to 50 percent compared to its predecessor, the SSD weighs only about one gram (less than half the weight of a U.S. dime), making it ideal for ultra-compact next generation notebooks, tablets and convertibles.

Next year, Samsung plans to launch its 1TB BGA SSD by adopting a high-density packaging technology called “FO-PLP (Fan-out Panel Level Packaging)” which Samsung Electronics developed with Samsung Electro-Mechanics.

New ‘Z- SSD’ breaks through performance limits of current NAND flash memory storage

Samsung has also developed a high performance, ultra-low latency SSD solution, the Z-SSD. Samsung’s Z-SSD shares the fundamental structure of V-NAND and has a unique circuit design and controller that can maximize performance, with four times faster latency and 1.6 times better sequential reading than the Samsung PM963 NVMe** SSD.

The Z-SSD will be used in systems that deal with extremely intensive real-time analysis as well as extending high performance to all types of workloads. It is expected to be released next year.

Financial Inclusion & Entrepreneurship to be tabled at SME Forum 2016 on August 23 in Karachi


The 10th Pakistan SME Forum 2016 organized by SHAMROCK Conferences International will be held on August 23, 2016 at the Pearl-Continental Hotel, Karachi. The theme of the moot is “Facilitating SMEs Makes Economic Sense” and will feature the sector’s critical issues

The National Financial Inclusion Strategy (NFIS) and Entrepreneurship are two of the main sessions dedicated to discussing the impact of these interventions on the SME sector in Pakistan. The SME sector promises robust economic growth by enabling the people to generate a healthy income for their ventures and fresh revenue streams for the country.

Additionally, the draft of the Geographical Indications Protection Law (GI) presented recently to the key stakeholders by the Intellectual Property Organization (IPO) will also come under discussion and debate at the SME Forum 2016.

Organized with the participation of the State Bank of Pakistan, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) of the Ministry of Industries, the Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME), Sindh Board of Investment and key stakeholders, the SME Forum 2016 will be addressing the sector’s vital issues taken up by the federal government. 

The topics to be covered in the 10th Pakistan SME Forum 2016 will include among others, capacity building of the primary sector, cottage industries at grass roots levels, banking, leasing, insurance and logistics facilities and technology advancements. Promotion of modern systems of farming, cultivation, irrigation and harvesting will also be debated.


PNSC seeks new ventures in Marine-fuel Bunkering in Pakistan



 Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) organized an interactive workshop in Karachi, to attract investments and find solutions wisdom-sharing with numerous international experts of the Marine-fuel Bunkering industry.

The Chairman PNSC, Arif Elahi gave an inspirational key-note speech, expressing PNSC’s interest in Bunkering ventures, as he highlighted the vast potential and robust developments that promise great business opportunities for investors in this arena. With the establishment of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), Pakistan is heading towards major growth in its shipping and energy industries.

The pioneering event was attended by many leading experts, professionals and stakeholders of the Bunkering industry from Pakistan, Middle East and the United Kingdom, including; the Manager Sales of World Fuel Services London, Maximillian Canegie-Jones; Global Operations Manager of Lloyds Register Fuel Oil Advisory Services of UK, Naeem Javed; General Manager of Rais Hassan Saadi Group of Dubai, Mujahid Hassan; and senior official of Dan Bunkering Dubai, Adil Qayyum.

Among other notable delegates were; Director of Marine Fleet Management Singapore, Ahmed Pervaiz; Head of Bunkering PNSC, Saad Masood, and the Commercial Manager of Pakistan Refinery Ltd, Sami ur Rehman, along with senior level representation of major financial institutions like Standard Chartered Bank, Mr. Adil Salahuddin, Head of Financial Markets.

The Executive Director (SM) Fleet of PNSC, Tariq Majeed, who was the Moderator of the workshop, and other senior executives from PNSC highlighted the regulatory incentives, tax-relief and support provided by the Pakistan government to promote the establishment of Bunkers, which play an important role in fueling the shipping operations and global cargo vessels, coming to the various sea-ports in Pakistan.

Over the years, PNSC has shown outstanding performance in its global shipping operations, earning nearly Rs.2 Billion in annual profits. It has raised its capacity to carry 700,000 tons of dead-weight annually, while it safely and successfully carries 90% of Pakistan’s oil imports. It is now planning to create partnerships with the bunkering enterprises, Oil-refineries, financial institutions and traders of marine-fuel, with willingness to invest in new machinery, cranes and dredgers, for strengthening the infrastructure at the sea-ports of Pakistan

The experts held insightful discussions on the various challenges and opportunities in this essential sector. With more than 4000 international vessels docking on the ports in Pakistan, there is a need to develop more efficient facilities and oil-testing labs to ensure quality and save the unnecessary expenditure incurred by the ships arriving in Pakistan. 70% of the costs in shipping operations go into the fueling of vessels

As the demand for Marine fuel increases in Pakistan, global investors can find great opportunities in bunkering ventures in Pakistan by creating synergies with the local entrepreneurs, to create higher standards of quality and efficiencies. With the sharp reduction and volatility in global oil prices, this whole industry needs to work in cohesion to minimize their risks, optimize growth and meet the emerging challenges. 


UBL and Mastercard Pakistan Launches Masterpass feature for its UBL Customers


On the occasion of 14th August, activation was held at Ocean Mall Karachi by Borgata Company, for their clients UBL and MasterCard Pakistan.
This was the launch of Masterpass QR Code, for the first time in Pakistan with collaboration with UBL. Masterpass QR is a new initiative for secure and instant transactions. Through UBL Omni application, customers now can scan a QR code at their preferred outlet for making payments, instead of using credit/debit card or cash.

The activation was interactive information based campaign to educate and assist customers, as to how they can avail Masterpass QR code facilities. UBL representatives were present at the activation booth to help customers open their UBL Omni accounts by following simple steps of CNIC and biometric verifications, followed by activation of their UBL Omni application and account through UBL Customer Service helpline. 

The activation was conducted on the 13th and 14th of august and I Phone 6 were given out, courtesy of Mastercard Pakistan, through digitally monitored lucky draws. ETIHAD AIRWAYS BRIDGES ABU DHABI WITH VENICE


Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, will expand its services to Italy with a daily flight to Venice Marco Polo Airport.

The new service will begin from 30 October 2016 and be served by an Airbus A319, offering 16 seats in Business and 90 in Economy. Together with Alitalia, its codeshare and equity partner, Etihad Airways will offer 35 weekly flights in and out of Italy, including double daily services to Rome and Milan.

Etihad’s Venice flight will offer convenient travel times for guests travelling between the UAE and the Italian city. In addition, the new service will offer seamless connections through Abu Dhabi’s hub to the popular Australia routes of Sydney and Melbourne, as well as key destinations in the GCC, Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and Northeast Asia.

Venice, renowned for its picturesque bridges and canals, is one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, while Italy is the world’s 5th most visited country - with over 50 million international arrivals in 2015, according to the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).

Etihad Airways started flights to Milan in 2007 before Rome was added to the network in 2014, contributing to a strong trade relationship between the United Arab Emirates and Italy.
